REGIONALISED LCIA FOR BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE BRIGHTWAY USERS (3 DAYS)
This three-day course provides participants with a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the Brightway 2.5 framework and its powerful extension, Edges, for performing regionalised and flexible LCIA. The extended format allows for a steady pace that encourages discussion and time for individual exercises to consolidate learning. The course combines theoretical sessions with guided, hands-on practice using open-source Python tools and Jupyter notebooks. Participants will learn how to build and analyse LCA models, manage uncertainty, exchange data, and visualise results. The second and third days of the course introduce Edges, enabling advanced applications such as inventory flow assessment (e.g., resource supply criticality), regionalised LCIA (e.g., biodiversity, water use), and scenario-based LCIA using parameterised characterisation factors. All course materials, including code examples, datasets, and slides, are hosted on GitHub and remain available after the course. Participants will leave with both a solid conceptual understanding and the practical skills needed to confidently apply Brightway and Edges in their own research or professional projects.
The course
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will:
- Understand Brightway’s architecture and data flow.
- Build and analyse complete LCA systems in Python.
- Perform uncertainty and sensitivity analyses.
- Handle data linking and exchange.
- Use Edges to perform spatially resolved LCIA, inventory flow assessment, and scenario-based LCIA.
- Reproduce and extend examples using open-source code provided on GitHub.

Suggested ECTS: 1.5
Software: All tools used (Brightway 2.5, Edges) are fully open-source
Data: An open LCA database will be provided
Repository: All course materials, examples, and exercises will be distributed and maintained on GitHub. The GitHub repository remains available with all notebooks, slides, datasets, and solutions for continued learning.
PARTICIPANTS REQUIREMENTS
To ensure that everyone can fully benefit from the course, participants are expected to meet the following prerequisites:
- Bachelor degree or equivalent.
- Familiarity with LCA principles: We will not cover the fundamentals of LCA, so participants should already understand core LCA concepts (functional units, system boundaries, impact assessment, etc.).
- Basic Python skills: Participants should be comfortable with basic Python syntax and simple operations (variables, functions, lists, loops). Those new to Python should to complete a short introductory tutorial before the course.
- No prior Brightway experience required
- You must bring own laptop computer, with software installed according to installation instructions provided in advance of the course.
